Can Liverpool emulate Arsenal’s Invincibles?

Liverpool have finished the year with a 13-point lead at the top of the Premier League table following victory over Wolves yesterday. Jurgen Klopp’s side have won 18 of their 19 league games this season and drawn the other against Manchester United. Liverpool’s  10th Premier League win in a row leaves them on 55 points, ahead of second-placed Leicester City with a match in hand. The last time Liverpool tasted defeat in the league was against Manchester City on 03 January 2019, when they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal currently holds the record for the longest unbeaten run of matches in Premier League history. Arsene Wenger’s Gunners went 49 games without tasting defeat between 2003 and 2004 before they were eventually stopped by their great rivals of the time – Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. If Liverpool continue their frightening form, they could emulate the Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ of 2003-04, when they went the entire season unbeaten.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has suggested that Liverpool can emulate his famous Gunners side and go the entirety of the season unbeaten, following their comfortable 4-0 win against Leicester City on Boxing day. The 42-year-old revealed that he is confident that the Merseyside club will win the league, with the big question left for the rest of the campaign now whether or not they can match Arsenal’s unbeaten record in 2004.

Liverpool have had an amazing year – 2019. 12 months after losing in Kiev to Real Madrid, Jurgen Klopp’s men conquered Europe in Madrid and recently won the FIFA Club World Cup to become the new kings in international club football. The next conquest for the Reds is the domestic title which has eluded the Merseyside club for almost three decades. The last time Liverpool lifted the English League title was in 1990 – before the Premier League started.

The Reds have come close a number of times including last season photo finish with Manchester City. The current league leaders have gone 50 matches undefeated at home in the Premier League. If they avoid defeat against Sheffield United on 02 January 2020, they will have gone a full year unbeaten in the league both home and away. They have won 27 of their last 28 Premier League games and dropped only two points so far this season.

The highlight of Liverpool’s run was their Boxing Day thumping of title rivals Leicester City at the King Power stadium, the Reds cruised to a four nil victory at the home of their closest challenger. At present it is hard to see any team beating Liverpool. We are only halfway through the campaign and already Arsenal’s record of being the only top-flight team to go unbeaten in a 38-game season seems under threat. If they do achieve this fantastic feat while having the honor of being reigning world and European champions, can they be considered to being the best team in the history of English football? Better than Manchester United or Manchester City’s Treble winners, and better than Arsenal’s Invincibles. England has never witnessed such a dominant season as the one Liverpool are constructing.

The Reds host Sheffield United in their first game of the New Year (02 January 2020) on the eve of their only Premier League defeat of 2019 (03 January 2019).
