LIVERPOOL
European champions Liverpool have the opportunity to add another trophy to their cabinet in the UEFA Super Cup against a local rival in Istanbul. The Reds lost on penalty shoot out to Manchester City in the FA Community Shield and will aim to avoid another defeat that can bring silverware. The Reds had a poor preseason but the performances against Manchester City and the league opener against Norwich City served as a reminder of what Jurgen Klopp’s team is capable of doing. Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson is ruled out of this tie with a knee problem and would be deputized by new arrival Adrian. Sadio Mane came off the bench in the Norwich victory and he is in contention for a starting role with his attack partners, Firmino and Salah.
CHELSEA
There isn’t a lot to time for Lampard and his team to feel sorry for themselves after the poor result in the season opener at Old Trafford. The performance wasn’t entirely abysmal but the mistakes made were duly punished and Liverpool aren’t the sort of team to gift chances. Frank Lampard will expect a response from his team when they take on rivals Liverpool in Turkey in the UEFA Super Cup. New boss Lampard will have to turn to the experienced heads like N’Golo Kante, Oliver Giroud and Willian for this final depending on how the younger players react to Sunday’s defeat. The Blues were on an eight game unbeaten run from last season till they lost at Manchester United in Lampard’s first game as Chelsea boss.
VERDICT – Who will win the 2019 UEFA Super Cup?
Taking into account the present form, the Reds are favorites for this game. Chelsea’s performance at Old Trafford showed the team weakness which Jurgen Klopp’s team will be happy to take advantage of during this final. Chelsea have only lost one of their last six meetings against Liverpool but it would be a shock if they lifted the European Super Cup on Wednesday night.
